Give
The First Gift - The Tenth (Part)
In a materialistic world, the Bible teaches us a different way of dealing with resources. With around 2,000 mentions, the topic of "giving" is more common in the Bible than "faith" or "love", which underlines its central importance. In Matthew 6, Jesus speaks of a spiritual battle between God and "Mammon" - the personified power of wealth that promotes trust in material security rather than in God. Money itself is not bad, what matters is our attitude towards it. Faithful stewardship begins with tithing, whereby we acknowledge that everything comes from God. To overcome the influence of mammon, we should start with small steps of faithfulness, seeing ourselves as stewards instead of owners and giving God first place in all areas of our lives - including our finances.
Beyond the Tithe
Generosity is deeply rooted in the nature of God and as his followers we are called to develop this trait. In the Hebrew language, generosity is described as a "good eye" - an eye that recognizes need and is willing to give of its own. The key to generosity lies in gratitude, so we should be generous out of gratitude for our salvation. Our handling of finances - through tithes, regular offerings and extraordinary gifts - is a touchstone of our faithfulness. God rewards generosity, not in return, but in recognition of our heart's attitude, with both temporal blessings and eternal rewards.
